Sotheby's, New York, 19 April 2001, lot 221

The arms are those of Metcalf. The sculptural lion head handles on this tureen should be compared to the fully-modeled horse head handles springing from shellwork on a pair of circa 1735 tureens by Kandler engraved with the Meynell arms, see Grimwade, Rococo Silver, pl. 24, and sold Sotheby's, New York, 16 June 1982, lot 77; that pair of tureens was also struck with maker's mark only four times.
