The inscription reads "The gift of the Pen y'ro Comp. to Dav. Pennant Esqr 1746."
David Pennant (1685?-1763) was a landowner from Downing, Flintshire in Wales. The donor in the inscription presumably refers to a military unit from Pembrokeshire, ‘Penfro’ being the Welsh for Pembroke.
