In March 1953, the atmosphere in a small high school in High Point, North Carolina, buzzed with excitement as a 16-year-old, 6 feet 10 inches tall teenager named Wilt Chamberlain entered the scene. Playing center for the Christian Street YMCA from Philadelphia, Chamberlain was already making waves and would later go on to become one of basketball's greatest players, famously known as "Wilt The Stilt."
As Chamberlain's presence captured the community's attention, High Point eagerly prepared to host the 25th annual National YMCA Basketball Tournament. The anticipation was palpable, and the stage was set for a momentous event.
On March 28, 1953, sports enthusiasts and writers were treated to a riveting match. High Point, the defending champions, faced off against Christian Street, the previous year's consolation winners, in a clash for the National Championship. Despite High Point being the favorites, Christian Street defied expectations.
In front of a sold-out crowd of over 800 spectators, Chamberlain took center stage, leading Christian Street to an 85-79 victory over High Point. Chamberlain's stellar performance earned him a well-deserved spot on the 1953 YMCA All-American team, alongside High Point players Powell, Hunsucker, and Haithcox.
Sotheby’s is proud to present Wilt Chamberlain’s National Champion YMCA medal.
