woodblock print, silver mica background, from the series Contest of Beauties of the Pleasure Quarters (Kakuchu bijin kurabe), signed Eisho ga (Pictured by Eisho), published by Yamaguchiya Chuemon, circa 1795-97


Vertical oban: 36.7 x 26.1 cm., 14½ x 10¼ in. 

A bust portrait, or okubi-e [lit. large head portrait] of the high-ranking courtesan (oiran) Hanaogi of the Ogiya [lit. House of Fans]. Against a shimmering silver mica ground, she wears a pink outer robe decorated with sparsely scattered cherry blossoms. The print is known in two versions: one with a mica ground and the other with a lighter background.
