Heinrich Meyring, born in Westphalia, is better known by his Italianised name, Enrico Merengo. He was a pupil of Italo-Flemish sculptor Giusto Le Court (1627-1679), to whom Merengo's works are clearly indebted in both style and composition. Religious sculptures by Merengo's hand mostly survive in Venetian churches.
