Heinrich Meyring, born in Westphalia, is better known by his Italianised name, Enrico Merengo. He was a pupil of Italo-Flemish sculptor Giusto Le Court (1627-1679), to whom Merengo's works are clearly indebted in both style and composition. Religious sculptures by Merengo's hand mostly survive in Venetian churches.
Sotheby's is grateful to Dr Maichol Clemente for his kind assitance in attributing this lot.
