Capturing a picturesque Vermont scene, Wolf Kahn’s Weathered Barns and Screens of Trees displays an intuitive use of color to create a harmonic and vibrant composition. Nestled within a grove of towering trees, the lilac barn stands in complementary contrast to the greens, oranges and yellows of the surrounding foliage. While the work remains influenced by color field painting in its general form, subtle shading and variations in tone build dimension in the pastel tones.

Often painting en plein-air, Kahn found great inspiration in the landscapes around him. The natural world was a jumping off point from which he extracted his brilliant color palettes and engaging compositions. In doing so, Kahn incorporates both realist and abstract motifs within his work, constructing the landscape with stylized forms and blocks of color. Through his color combinations and expressive brushstrokes, Kahn finds breathtaking beauty in the simplest of subjects and compositions that inspire a fascination with the natural world.
