Description

composed of two plaques with hook and catch, decorated with coral-set filigree decoration and blue and green enamel details

11cm. approx. diam.

This belt buckle was intended to be worn with a woman's courtly costume, as seen on various outfits illustrated in L. Görünür, Women's costume of the Late Ottoman Era from the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection, Sadberk Hanım Müzesi, Istanbul, 2010, cat. no.40, pp.152-3.

Its distinctive almond-shaped and round coral decoration corresponds to a style traditionally attributed to Saphrampolis in northern Anatolia, or Trebizond on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey, two cities with predominant Greek population at the time (see Elgood 2009, pp.108-9).
