The Rolex Submariner was introduced in 1954 as a robust, highly water-resistant luxury diver’s wristwatch. Its timeless design barely evolved over the course of 60 years, contributing to the legendary status of this model. The reference 16610 was produced for more than 20 years between 1987 and 2010 and introduced major technical innovations. It replaced the outgoing Submariner reference 16800 and is considered by many collectors as the last “pre-modern” iteration, before Rolex introduced the maxi cases and the ceramic bezel insert with ref. 116610.

The reference introduced progressive changes over its long production period, such as the transition from Tritium to Luminova luminescent material in the late 1990s, the withdrawal of drilled lugs and the Rolex engraving to the dial outer ring. This reference is powered by the caliber 3135 which remains in use for the current reference 116610.

The present Rolex Submariner reference 16610 bears an L series case, dated from 1989. As an early example for this reference should, it bears a tritium dial with circled indexes, marked ‘SWISS-T,25’ at 6 o’clock. The indexes and pearl bezel insert have developed a matching patina over the years. The watch is furthermore offered with its original 93150 bracelet with diving extension.

The reference 16610 is the most fitting blend of modern and vintage, echoing a more traditional design language whilst being a reliable daily wearer.
