Marek Włodarski (Henryk Streng) was one of the leading representatives of the Lviv avant-garde of the interwar period. He was a student of Kazimierz Sichulski at the Free Academy of Fine arts in Lviv, and of Fernand Leger at the Academie Moderne in Paris in the early 1920s. Of Jewish origin, he was a participant in the September Campaign and the Warsaw Uprising, after which he was imprisoned at the Stutthof concentration camp. He used the psydonym Włodarski from the war years onwards. His individual, eclectic style ranged from futurism, formism and cubism to surrealism and primitivism, but his aesthetics were mainly shaped by Leger, as evident in the present work.
