Description

Group of American Wrought Iron Hearth Cooking Equipment

19th Century

Comprising a 17th century brass tripod cooking pot, long handled frying pan, a frying pan stamped W. FOSTER, standing frying pan stamped W. FOSTER, a spider pot, a grisette, a standing broiler stamped JL, a ladle stamped W&S, and a peel stamped WC and with another indistinct stamp. (9 pieces)

Length of peel 70 1/4 in.; Length of ladle 40 3/8 in.

Foundry Ladle: Philip H. Bradley Co. Antiques, Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
The large ladle was purportedly found submerged in one of the rivers or creeks near, Cumberland County, New Jersey; possibly Manumuskin Creek. The person who excavated the ladle claimed it was from the long defunct Smith and Wood Iron Foundry that came into being around 1814, near Millville, New Jersey. The initial S hammered into the shaft of the ladle, followed by possibly S&W, helps to substantiate this story, as well as the rust and wear commensurate with exposure to sand and water.
