American Needlework Sampler

The signature is worked in a rectangular box below the righthand verse; it reads Wrought by Phebe Aurelia Daman Aged 13 Years 1829.

The landscape contains a one story house with two chimneys. there are two long sixteen pane windows on the side of the house and a horizontal window with fifteen panes and a French door on the face of the house. The house is placed behind a picket fence which has two gates a small deciduous tree is planted behind the fence to the rear of the house; a similar tree is placed at the right side. A flowering tree with a dove cote and a pair of birds lies to the right near the gate. A pair of twin green peaks which arise behind the roof of the house possibly represent evergreen trees. The flowering trees across the bottom flank a centered basket of flowers upon a large bird is perched. Each of the trees has birds perched in it except the evergreen tree which is third from the left and is flanked by a pair of right facing dogs. The tree at the extreme right has a left facing dog to the right and a running deer to the left. The intervening spaces between the trees at the base have stems of flowers, not all of which are completed.

Thirteen winters have I lived

Sheltered safe from every storm

Thirteen springs have lent their breath

To expand my little form

Thirteen summers have unveiled

Natures beauties to mine eye

Thirteen autumns brought their fruit

Ripened in their mellow sky

In the length of thirteen years

Never once has failed my food

But a Fathers hand has still

Benn extended for my good

Time would fail should I attempt

To recount my mercies o'er

They are numerous as the sands

That enwrap the ocean shore,

The god who gives me friends

And home and health and clothes

And food guards me from

Every ill because he

Loves to do me good,

What hast thou returned my child

Has obedience marked thy life

Has thy heart with love been filled

Then resolve this day my love

All thine errors to amend

Look with humble faith to him

Who is thy forgiving friend

Choose him for thine only guide

In this world of care and strife

Choose whatever he directs

Choose the precepts he has given

Choose him for thy king on earth

And he vill be thy god in heaven

Let your thoughts be serious chaste heavenly

Conversation modest true decent profitable

Works useful charitable holy
