Joseph Losey was an influential American film director, screenwriter, and producer whose career was shaped by political conviction, artistic ambition, and exile.
Born in Wisconsin, into a wealthy and conservative family, Losey initially studied medicine but soon turned to theater. Deeply influenced by Marxist ideas, he traveled to Moscow in 1931 and later studied under Bertolt Brecht in Germany, developing a taste for socially engaged and visually expressive art.
In the 1940s, he began directing films in Hollywood, but his career was disrupted in the 1950s when he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era for his leftist political ties. He chose self-exile and moved to the United Kingdom, where he rebuilt his career.
In Britain, Losey collaborated frequently with playwright Harold Pinter, creating acclaimed films such as The Servant (1963), Accident (1967), and The Go-Between (1971) which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. His later films include Mr. Klein (1976) with Alain Delon and Don Giovanni (1979), based on Mozart’s opera. Over his career, he worked with major actors including Dirk Bogarde, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jane Fonda. He was known for his psychologically complex characters, social critique, and elegant visual style.
Joseph Losey died in London in 1984, leaving behind a work marked by political depth and cinematic innovation.
This exceptional Cartier Baignoire was a personal gift to the renowned director from his close friend, the legendary Elizabeth Taylor. Purchased at the Cartier boutique in London, the watch proudly bears the Cartier London ‘JC’ stamp — a mark of rarity in itself.
Extraordinarily, both the case and clasp feature the same serial, making this watch highly desirable among avid collectors. Furthermore, it bears 1967 English hallmarks for 18k gold.
Only three examples of this particular model were available at the London boutique: one was acquired by acclaimed actor Laurence Harvey, another by a gentleman from the film industry, and the third — the present piece — was given to Losey. It seems this exclusive model found its way directly into the hands of prominent figures in cinema.
Offered directly by Joseph Losey's family, this watch is fresh to the market.
Its unique provenance makes it an extraordinary opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The condition of the watch is remarkable, with a beautifully preserved case and dial that reflect the care it received throughout the years. The watch also comes with original Cartier London service invoices, adding further weight to its provenance.
Numerous period photographs show Losey wearing his beloved Baignoire, which he clearly cherished and maintained with great care.
This Cartier Baignoire is more than a timepiece — it is a testament to a lifelong friendship, cinematic history, and timeless style.
The piece is accompanied by an unsigned cigar box gifted by Alain Delon.
