An Iznik Pottery Tile, Turkey, circa 1585
decorated in underglaze cobalt-blue, bole-red, and green, outlined in black, with swirling flowerheads in a polylobed red-bordered roundel, the interstices filled with arabesques on a green ground, with metal stand

The present tile is decorated with a vibrant design of swirling flowers which rotate in a graceful clockwise rhythm. The spandrels are filled with trefoil palmettes flanked by arabesques of composite blossoms, all set against a luminous green ground that enhances the brilliance of the composition. Closely related tiles can be found in the Mesih Pasha Mosque in Istanbul, commissioned by a vizier of Murad III and completed by the imperial architect Sinan in 1585.
