Description

Property from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery

The Presentation in the Temple, miniature on a Leaf from a Book of Hours

Illuminated manuscript in Latin on vellum. [France, 15th century (c.1430s)]

Single leaf, c.160×120mm; written in gothic textura, 12 lines (c.90×60); line-fillers and 1-, 2-, and 3-line initials in gold and colours, the miniature (c.80×55mm) surrounded by a full border, the verso with a 3-sided border. Worn and dirty, with a hole, and traces of adhesive tape. Despite the damage, this can still be seen to have been a fine miniature with rich patterning and an elaborate architectural setting.
