Description

Ammonius Hermiae

Εις τας του Αριστοτελους κατηγοριας υπομνημα... In praedicamenta Aristotelis commentarius. Aristotelis vita (Εις τας πεντε φωνας του Πορφυριου υπομνημα... In quinque voces Porphyrii commentarius). Venice: Aldus (sons of Aldus), 1546

2 works in one volume, 8vo (152 x 97mm.), woodcut Aldine device on title-pages and final verso of second work (otherwise blank), woodcut diagrams in second work, nineteenth-century half calf, red edges, first title-page slightly soiled and laid down, first and last few leaves slightly stained, upper hinge broken

An uncommon Aldine edition of Ammonius, the late antique Alexandrian Neoplatonic philosopher renowned for his commentaries on Aristotle. The two texts on logic in this volume (commentaries on Aristotle's Topics and Porphyrius's Introduction) were probably prepared for publication by Ammonius himself (though with later interpolations) but most of the other texts ascribed to him were taken from lecture notes by his students.
