Pair of Small Busts

marble on later black marble bases

heights overall: 16 in. and 16 ½ in.; 40.64 cm. and 41.9 cm.

Orazio Marinali (1643-1720) was the most gifted member of a family of sculptors working the Veneto in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The skillful use of chiaroscuro and drilling, and the characteristic mannered anatomy in Orazio’s work is evident in this pair of small busts of Bacchus and old man (probably Winter).

This pair of busts probably come from a set of the four Seasons with these two representing Autumn and Winter, respectively.
