tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

diameter: 7 ⅞ in.; 20 cm.


probably depicting the death of the Greek tragedian Aeschylus reclining on the right and measuring a celestial globe, an eagle above, a female figure carrying a bow approaching from the left; a mountainous landscape and a city are in the background, the reverse with old collectors' labels, including one marked 'H.A.C 12' and a second, modern label with the number '84,' which is also written in red ink
