Property from a Swiss Private Collection
“The Nessus Painter”
Italian, Siena, circa 1500-1515
Large Ewer Basin, or Stand, with the Arms of the Este of Ferrara
tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)
diameter: 16 ½ in.; 42 cm.
decorated with broad border and central, polylobed boss in relief; the lobes painted with blue oak leaves with yellow acorns on orange ground; the center with an escutcheon with the coat of arms of the Este family of Ferrara; further decorative motifs within multiple concentric circles and repeated grotesques on an orange background with facing dolphins, cornucopiae, palm trees and masks on the border; the reverse with large flower with eight petals encircled by a border of half- petals interspersed with further patterns inspired by 15th century Hispano-Moresque lusterware.
reverse also with an inventory number painted in red ‘768’ (from the Otto Beit collection, affixed in 1916) and round collection label partly torn off.
