Italian, Deruta, circa 1535
Lustered Plate
tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)
diameter: 16 in.; 40.6 cm.
with a sphinx, the reverse with old collectors' labels and the inventory number 147 written in red ink
Similarly large lustered dishes were produced in Deruta, most often showing a sphinx holding an armorial shield before them, one of example of which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. cz173.1910).1
