AN IZNIK BLUE GROUND POTTERY JUG WITH SAZ LEAVES AND TULIPS, TURKEY, CIRCA 1585
the earthenware body of baluster form on a low foot, with a slightly everted neck and loop handle, painted in underglaze cobalt blue, green and relief red, outlined in black, with alternating saz leaves and tulips, old collection label to underside of foot

A comparable example, with tulips and bunches of three saz leaves on a blue ground, set with English parcel-gilt silver mounts, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no.1561-1904. Two further similar examples, with hyacinths rather than tulips, are in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Museum, Lisbon, inv. nos.792 and 793 (see Atasoy and Raby 1989, pp.270-1, nos.594-6).
