In 1953, the world's first modern dive watch was created by Blancpain. 70 years later, the brand chose to pay homage in three distinctly different ‘Acts’. While Act I and II were a reinterpretation of the original, and a technical tour de force of modern diving technology respectively, Act III pays direct homage to one of the most collectible and desirable Fifty-Fathoms models ever produced – the Milspec I.

The Blancpain Milspec has unique ties to the US, having been designed around US Naval specifications that were originally drafted in 1955, which called for the development of an internal moisture monitor. After undergoing a series of rigorous tests during the late 1950s, the Fifty-Fathoms became the watch supplied to the US Navy, as well as the French Navy, and several other nations.

Enthusiasts will note that Act III utilizes the original Fifty-Fathoms case – out of production for decades and making a triumphant return in 9K Bronze Gold. This is a patented alloy enriched with 37.5% gold (hallmarked 9K), copper – 50%, allowing it to be called "bronze" – silver, palladium, and gallium. This means that it can be worn in direct contact with the skin and will have a materially longer lifespan than any other copper alloys due to its gold and palladium content.

The dial is rendered in the original ‘Blancpain’ and ‘Fifty-Fathoms’ fonts, with a matte black color offset by cream-colored Super-LumiNova – and the iconic moisture indicator that was developed for the original MilSpec I. The bezel is now made out of black ceramic, with matching Super-LumiNova to the dial and hands. The Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act III comes on a black and gold NATO-style strap, that is made from fishing nets recovered from the ocean. Produced in a strictly limited series, we are pleased to join with Blancpain in offering watch #70 of this limited edition for the benefit of Oceana.
