Probably Simon Emil Moritz Oppenheim (1831–1877), Cologne;

Probably by whose Executors sold, Cologne, Heberle, 14 October 1878, lot 43 (as Pieter Neefs the Elder);

Probably Rudolf Peltzer (1825–1910), Cologne;

Probably by whose Executors sold, Amsterdam, F. Muller & Cie., 26–27 May 1914, lot 187 (as Hendrik van Steenwijck the Younger);

Anonymous sale, Dublin, Town and Country Estates Ltd, 19 March 1959, lot 348 (as Pieter Neeffs the Elder);

Where acquired by the great-uncle of the present owners.

Probably J. Howarth, The Steenwyck Family as Masters of Perspective, catalogue raisonné, Turnhout 2009, no. II. B. 170, p. 191, as possibly by Hendrick van Steenwyck the Younger.

This particular composition was executed by Pieter Neefs the Elder, Pieter Neefs the Younger (1620 – after 1675) as well as Hendrik van Steenwijck the Younger (1580–1640) on multiple occasions. Based on close inspection of the signature there is no evidence to suggest this signature has been added later and therefore supports the attribution towards Pieter Neefs the Elder.
