Painted while the artist was art master at Ampleforth Abbey, Yorkshire, in the early 19th century;
Taken by Bishop Peter Augustine Baines to Prior Park, Bath, 1830–35;
Returned to Ampleforth Abbey, Yorkshire, in 1835, since when it has remained in the collection.
Francis Gainsford was born in Worksop, a market town in the Bassetlaw District in Nottinghamshire, in circa 1782. Mostly known as a portrait painter, he exhibited fairly regularly Royal Academy between 1805 and 1815. By the time of the 1861 United Kingdom census he was aged 79, living in Well Street, Holywell, Flintshire and described as 'Proprietor of houses'.1
