woodblock print, from the series One Thousand Pictures of the Ocean (Chie no umi), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, changed from Hokusai), published by Moriya Jihei (Kinshindo), circa 1833


Horizontal chuban: 19 x 26 cm., 7½ by 10¼ in.

Seven men fish off the coast of Uraga in Sagami Province, present-day Yokosuka. One stoops to place his catch in a basket; another has made a strike and raises his rod to unhook his fish. The tide is low and the water completely still. A narrow rocky spit leads to a small lighthouse. Along the wide expanse of the bay, thatched dwellings nestle among densely forested banks. The darkening water in the foreground signals the approach of night.
