Description
woodblock print, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), signed Hokusai aratame Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, changed from Hokusai), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1832, blue outline
Horizontal oban: 25.3 x 37.1 cm, 10 by 14½ in.
Men picnic beneath the celebrated cushion pine in the garden of Ryuganji Temple. In the lower left, a gardener rakes needles fallen from the surrounding young pines. Along the footpath, a father points towards Mount Fuji as his young son looks on, a cloth held between them. The mounded form of the cushion pine plays a subtle call-and-response with the conical shape of Mount Fuji.
