Pierre Granet was born in Villeneuve-d’Ornon and was a student of Augustin Dumont (1801-1884) and Jean Joseph Perraud (1819-1876). He established himself as a successful and prolific artist from his debut at the 1874 Salon where he was awarded a second-class medal for his first submission. He went on to receive several higher distinctions, notably gold medals in the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900, as well as being named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, also in 1900.
