Though it was Peter Schatborn who first suggested the attribution of this fine sheet to Sebastien Vrancx, Els Verhaak and Marieke de Winkel subsequently provided further enlightening information surrounding the sitter, identifying the costume of the woman depicted as Spanish. Drs. de Winkel also previously noted that the woman's hairstyle dates from circa 1620 and to judge from her dress, a mante with a veil, she is a widow of the upper classes, with the handkerchief she holds in her left hand also a symbol of status in Spain. Drs. Verhaak has compared the figure type in the present drawing to a figure in the fifth print of Fashions of different nations (Hollstein 237-246) by Pieter de Jode after Sebastien Vrancx, datable to circa 1600-1610. This observation is of particular interest given that the dimensions of the figure in the present work correspond exactly to those of the figure in the print.
