When one thinks about the quintessential classic sport swatch, the Rolex Daytona immediately comes to mind. Designed to meet the exacting needs of motor racing professionals and launched in 1963, the Daytona has captured the imaginations and aspirations of collectors all over the world ever since.

The reference 6265 and 6263 exemplifies the evolution of the Rolex Daytona. Introduced in 1969, the reference retained the classic acrylic tachymeter bezel insert originally seen on the references 6241, and is enhanced with screw-down waterproof pushers and crown as opposed to the earlier pump chronograph pushers also found on the reference 6239 & 6241.

Inside, the 6263 is fitted with the famous caliber Valjoux 727, which was an evolution from the caliber 722-1 present on some 6239, 6241 and 6240. To further enhance its performance, Rolex replaced the balance to increase the precision by increasing vibrations from 18,000 to 21,000. This movement was eventually replaced by the automatic ‘Zenith’ chronograph caliber 4030 in 1988.

The present lot is nicknamed the “Big Red” Daytona, due to the printing of Daytona in red above the subdial at 6 o'clock. It features a striking reverse panda dial, with a black dial and contrasting white registers. Exceptionally well-preserved, this piece offers collectors a rare chance to own an iconic Daytona model. It is accompanied by its original presentation box, outer packaging, punched Official Chronometer Certification, booklets, and service invoice, adding to its appeal and authenticity.
