There are few watches as iconic as the Rolex GMT-Master. First introduced in 1954, it was instantly recognizable as the official timekeeper for Pan American Airways’ pilots, and over the decades the Rolex GMT-Master collection has seen a remarkable evolution.
The launch of the Rolex GMT-Master II in 1983 included some significant aesthetical and technological updates to the beloved model. This new iteration of the GMT-Master family featured a sapphire crystal and the automatic cal. 3085. The updated cal. 3085 allowed the wearer to independently adjust the main hour hand separate from the GMT hand, enabling a third time zone to be tracked. The GMT-Master II has since been the watch chosen to debut many key Rolex innovations such as the ceramic (later dubbed Cerachrom) bezel in 2005, and again in 2013 with the first two-color single piece ceramic bezel, cementing its position as one of Rolex’s most popular models.
An iteration of the beloved GMT-Master II collection, the SARU is one of the most eye-catching examples and the epitome of Rolex luxury craftsmanship. Set with diamonds, rubies and sapphires, the name SARU comes from the sapphire and ruby-set bezel. The original SARU debuted in the mid-1980s and the choice of blue sapphires and red rubies was a sparkling nod to the original GMT-Master ‘Pepsi’ that debuted back in 1954.
The present example is an exquisite iteration of the GMT-Master II SARU that features a diamond pavé dial and diamond pavé link bracelet. This example is powered by the cal. 3285 that debuted in 2018, featuring higher precision and power reserve than its predecessor the cal. 3186. The cal. 3285 features Rolex’s Chronergy escapement and boasts a power reserve of approximately 70 hours compared to 48 hours of its predecessor.
