The "Oyster Sotto Paul Newman" is considered the pinnacle of rarity and desirability among all Paul Newman Daytona models. With fewer than 25 known examples and only a small fraction sold at auction, this timepiece epitomizes exclusivity in the world of vintage Rolex watches.
The name "Oyster Sotto," which translates to "Oyster Underneath" in Italian, reflects the unique dial layout of the Reference 6263 Paul Newman Daytona. These watches feature the phrase "Rolex Cosmograph Oyster" beneath the Rolex logo, distinguishing them from the white-dialed Paul Newman models, where the sequence reads "Rolex Oyster Cosmograph." The black-dialed “Oyster Sotto” versions are especially rare, making them the ultimate collector's prize.
These dials were fitted to the earliest waterproof Reference 6263 models, which debuted with screw-down pushers to enhance water resistance. Interestingly, the dials originated from non-waterproof models such as the Reference 6262 and 6264, which bore the label "Rolex Cosmograph" only. The "Oyster" designation was later added to signify the improved waterproof capability of the 6263. Notably, the "Oyster" font displays distinct characteristics, such as the absence of serifs, setting it apart from the rest of the dial text.
There are two versions of this dial configuration:
Mark I
This series has serial numbers starting closely with 2'085. The legs of the "R" in "Rolex" are farther apart than those in the Mark II. The "G" in "Cosmograph" is serifed.
Mark II
This series appeared later in production and can be found on serial numbers 2'197’8** and higher. The "R" in "Rolex" is more serifed, and the legs are closer together. The "G" in "Cosmograph" is rounder and lacks serifs. Fewer Mark II examples have appeared on the market in recent years compared to the Mark I.
This example exemplifies the rarer Mark II variant. Its very good condition, with intact luminous dots, vibrant sub-dial colors, and crisp graphics, underscores its historical and aesthetic appeal. This "Oyster Sotto” Paul Newman Daytona Ref. 6263 is one of the most extraordinarily rare and beautiful Daytona models ever produced.
