Ernst Schwitters

Ernst Schwitters was the son of the German Dada and Constructivist artist Kurt Schwitters (1887 - 1948). After a visit to the family home from fellow Dadaist Man Ray in 1929, Ernst and his father began producing photograms and set up a darkroom in their bathroom. While many of Ernst's photographs remain largely unknown today, the avant-garde abstractions speak to an era of artistic experimentation and collaboration. The only comparable photograms that have appeared at auction were offered in 1998 from the sale of The Barry Friedman collection, likely including the present work.
