Description

Collection of T.T. Tsui (1940-2010), Hong Kong.

This unusual jade pendant belongs to a small group of Warring States jade carving masterfully modelled in the shape of a dragon with a sinuous body grooved to resemble a twisted rope. See a closely related example of a phoenix jade pendant also with a similar rope-twist design, late Warring States period, currently in the Anhui Provincial Institute of Archaeology, illustrated in Yang Boda, Zhongguo yuqi quanji [Complete collection of Chinese jades], vol.1, Hebei, 2005, pl. 284.
