Upmann with import tax bands, engraved inside in Russian with 'To the friend of the afflicted / Teofil Igntievitch Vdovikovsky / from / a sincerely grateful patient / V.V. Navretsky / Odessa, 28 February 1896', struck inside with partial maker's mark, 84 standard

length 20.9cm, 8¼in.

Teofil Igntievitch Vdovikovsky (b. 1833) was the senior doctor in the Odessa state hospital, pioneering new approaches to public health.


Vasily Vasilievich Navrotsky (1851 – 1911) was a well-known publisher and a journalist. His paper 'The Odessa Leaflet', was published from 1872 and by 1914 became one of the most widely circulated provincial news publications in the Russian Empire.
