the white ground with blue cartouches, decorated with pink flowers and gilt sprays and scrolls, gilt scroll handles and rosette finial, with painted Imperial cypher of Nicholas I

A La Vielle Russie, New York

The present lot was part of a service ordered by Nicholas I in 1834 as a present to Mahmud II, Sultan of Turkey (1808-1839), after the signing of the Treaty of Unkiar Skellessi of 1832, whereby the Russian gained access for an eight-year period to the Dardanelles. Part of this service, including the pair to this tureen, is on display in the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul.
