The arms are those of Lawrence. The initials are those of Edward Newbold Lawrence (1805-1839) and his wife Lydia Ann Lawrence (1811-79) and their son Colonel Frederick Newbold Lawrence, perhaps as a 21st birthday gift.

Colonel Frederick Newbold Lawrence (1834-1916), commanded the 15th National Guard Regiment, New York, during the Civil War, became president of the Stock Exchange in 1882, and president of the Union Club in 1908; he was also supervisor of Flushing, a patron of Art and Music, and an owner of fast road horses. He is buried in the family cemetery, part of the original grant by Dutch Governor Willem Kieft of New Amsterdam to John and William Lawrence and others in 1645. Among ancestors buried there are John Lawrence, twice mayor of New York city in 1673 and 1691, and Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence, mayor of New York City 1834-37. The Lawrence cemetery was declared a city landmark in 1967.
