Description

After Francesco Fanelli (1577 - after 1641)

Italian or English, 18th century

Inkwell in the form of a triton riding a dolphin

bronze, on a serpentine marble base

bronze: 11.5cm., 4½in.

base: 2.5 by 15 by 12cm., 1 by 6 by 4¾in.

Formerly thought Netherlandish, the present model was attributed to Francesco Fanelli by Anthony Radcliffe. Of the two versions published as part of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, the gilt bronze example (op. cit., no. 46) compares to the present cast in both facture and the variation in the tail. Radcliffe proposed an origin of the gilt Thyssen cast in a London workshop in the late 17th century.
