The battle of Leckerbeetje took place on 5 February 1600 between 22 Brabantine cavalrymen loyal to Albert VII, Archduke of Austria, and 22 French cavalrymen serving in the army of the Dutch Republic. The event was commemorated in songs, poems, paintings and prints, with this painting likely inspired by an engraving by Joannes van Doetechum the Younger, after Sebastiaen Vrancx.1
