A German Gold and Mother of Pearl Snuff Box, Probably Dresden, Circa 1730


of cartouche shape, the slightly domed cover carved with strapwork and shells and mounted with a vari-color gold plaque chased after Oudry with a hound flushing a pheasant, surrounded by gold panels pierced and chased with foliage issuing from boars’ heads, the gold sides chased with shells, flowers and fruits on sablé and diaper grounds, the curved mother of pearl base carved with spreading strapwork and diaper with piqué point gold studs, the rim struck with an unclear mark

The chased gold scene is copied from a print after a painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry from 1724, property of the English National Trust at The Vyne, Hampshire.
