Description

Keisai Eisen (1790-1848)

No. 15, Itahana

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido (Kisokaido rokujukyu tsugi no uchi), unsigned, published by Iseya Rihei (Kinjudo), circa 1835-38

Horizontal oban: 23.6 x 35.6 cm., 9¼ x 14 in.

Travellers coming and going from the village of Itahama trudge through the snow. The sun has just set over the horizon. Pine trees line the bank of the river.

This is the first edition with the blue bokashi shading in the river at the bottom instead of the top, and the red publisher's seal reading Ikenaka Iseri (on later impressions the seal changes).
