Genoa c. 1520 - 1604

Allegory of Music

Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk, heightened with white, within brown ink framing lines;

bears old attribution in brown ink, lower left: Sesco Salviati.

176 by 146 mm

The present work is highly reminiscent of the style of Perino del Vaga, who worked in Genoa from 1527 until 1530. Andrea and Ottavio Semino were among the most active followers of the stylistic innovations produced by Perino during his Genoese period. The two brothers, sons of Antonio who was also a painter (c.1485-1555), often collaborated on the same decorative projects and their styles are, at times, easily confused.
