Design for the upper section of an altarpiece with the Holy Trinity flanked by Angels surmounted by the Theological virtues in a pediment

Pen and brown ink over traces of black chalk; triangular top

207 by 168 mm

This design with a roundel representing the Trinity in the middle must record the upper register of an altarpiece, possibly depicting an Assumption of the Virgin.  Stylistically, the drawing is very close to Vasari's graphic style and the elaborate composition is also similar to a number of the master's schemes, in which architecture, sculpture and painting merge seamlessly into a unified whole.  There are several examples of the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin in Vasari's oeuvre, and he frequently incorporated tondi into his monumental altarpiece compositions in Arezzo and Florence.
