Over its 65 years of existence, the Rolex Submariner went through several changes since its initial introduction in 1953, while always staying true to its original, recognisable design. The Rolex Submariner has become an icon in its own right and several vintage references and versions have become increasingly collectable over the past decades.

One of the most significant changes that the Submariner saw over the years, was the introduction of a date window with a cyclops for certain references. This change was first put in place on the reference 1680.

Although this model was available for a decade, early pieces easily differentiate themselves from later versions through the red highlighted ‘Submariner’ signature on the dial. Classified by enthusiasts as the ‘Red Submariner’ after its highly sought-after characteristic. Different dial variations - known as Marks, can be distinguished through slight variations of the graphics or fonts.

This particular example is a Mark V, feet first dial, distinguishable through the two slightly open 6s printed underneath the red ‘Submariner’ signature. The Mark V dial can be found on pieces with a serial number starting with 2 or 3 million which matches the case of the present lot.

The dial, the hands and even the pearl of the bezel have further developed an attractive and matching patina. The case still retains attractive proportions.

The reference 1680 certainly was a historical landmark for the Rolex Submariner and this present lot perfectly embodies it as well as including features that appeal to vintage collectors.
