Description

The buckle composed of two late 19th century jadeite carvings, each depicting a bird on a branch highlighted with cabochon rubies and emeralds, suspending a jadeite hollolith chain terminating in a carved jadeite monkey set with a cabochon ruby, signed Wièse, maker's marks for Louis Wièse, French assay marks for gold, fitted case stamped Wièse.

The jadeite plaques, monkey and hololith chain are datable to the Qing dynasty of the late 19th century. Each plaque depicts a phoenix which is a symbol of rebirth, immortality and renewal. The monkey holding a peach, on the other hand, stands for longevity, good fortune and protection.
