The Rolex GMT traces its history back to the mid 1950s when Pam Am Airlines looked to the storied watchmaker for a timepiece pilots can use on long-haul flights to track multiple time zones. Rolex’s solution would revolutionize watchmaking history and design creating the world's first cosmopolitan wristwatch. The launch of the Reference 1675 in 1959 replaced the original Bakelite inserts with studier aluminum bezels, and its unrivaled reputation as a reliable and durable companion made the 1675 one of Rolex’s longest-running references, ceasing production only in 1980.
What makes the present 1675 particularly interesting, is the full suite of accessories accompanying the watch that have been carefully preserved over the decades since the 24th of January, 1972 when it was purchased by the original owner, and its backstory befitting of a timepiece that witnessed the evolution of aeronautics.
Acquired while on active duty in Laos, the original owner of our present 1675 was a decorated Air Force pilot and mechanic who flew covert operations in Southeast Asia with Air America. Ever the adventurous risk taker, after retiring from service, he continued to fly helicopters to fight fires, rescue people at sea, and to film news channel coverage, and all the while, our present 1675 sat faithfully on his wrist, reliably and accurately keeping time.
Accompanied by a matte brown Mark II dial, marking the second generation of dials utilized by Rolex during it's two decade run, the present 1675 is complimented by a solid gold bracelet allowing the the wearer to switch between the original Rolex leather straps or bracelet. We are pleased to offer this exceptional piece of history that truly captured the spirit of the Rolex GMT across time and meridians.
