Description

two inscribed japanese wood boxes (3)

Height 25.1 cm, 9⅞ in.

Sotheby’s London, 18th November 1998, lot 872.

The inscriptions on the two Japanese boxes provide indications of later appreciations of the work by members of the Hata Zoroku lineage. The inscription on the first box states that Hata Zoroku viewed the piece in 1934, a date further specified by the cyclical designation 甲戌 (Kōjutsu). The second box bears an inscription noting that Hata Zoroku IV (1898– ) examined the work in 1981, corresponding to the Year of 辛酉 (Shinyū).
