Description

woodblock print, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fuji sanjurokkei), signed Hiroshige ga (Pictured by Hiroshige), published by Tsutaya Kichizo (Koeido), 4th month 1858

Vertical oban: 35.3 x 24.2 cm, 13⅞ by 9½ in.

Two young women look out over the plain at Mount Fuji from a teahouse at Zoshigaya on the outskirts of Edo. One sits on a bench of a tea stall smoking a kiseru pipe, while the other gazes over the flatlands. Pink chrysanthemums emerge from the bottom of the scene, growing on four stakes.
