Description

woodblock print, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fuji sanjurokkei), signed Hiroshige ga (Pictured by Hiroshige), published by Tsutaya Kichizo (Koeido), 4th month 1858

Vertical oban: 37.1 x 25.4 cm, 14⅝ by 10 in.

Hiroshige’s tribute to Hokusai’s Under the Wave off Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave. Here, the tempestuous waters thrash to the lower right off the sea at Satta. In a device used in another of Hiroshige’s most famous prints, Awa Province: Naruto Whirlpools[see Lot 232], plovers (chidori) in flight appear like a spume of wave in what could be described as an elegant confusion, or mitate.
