Description

woodblock print, surimono, embellished with embossing, from the series Famous Products of Edo, Produced by Shunman (Edo meibutsu, Shunman sei), signed Hokkei sha (sketched by Hokkei), privately issued for the Gogawa Poetry Circle (Gogawa-ren), circa 1810s

Shikishiban surimono: 20.2 x 18.1 cm, 8 by 7⅛ in.

It appears that Shunman oversaw the production of this private commission by the Gogawa Poetry Circle, ensuring the high quality he was known for. One sparrow is depicted in flight,; the other perched in the jaws of an onigawara tile.
