The figures of Christ and Saint John the Baptist derive from a composition of the same subject by Cesare da Sesto (1477–1523).1 First recorded by Vasari in 1568, Sesto's large-scale panel was displayed in the Palazzo della Zecca di Milano before it appears in the collection of Mr Prospero Visconti (1543/4–1592) in 1584, and the Gallarati Scotti family, Milan, in 1674, where it is still held today.2
