Where acquired by the present owner.

Stylistically, this arresting painting can be dated to Giordano's early phase and compares closely to the works he produced during the 1660s and 1670s, when the influence of his teacher Jusepe de Ribera can be observed. The composition also draws parallels with Guido Reni's Salome holding the head of John the Baptist, completed c. 1638–39.1

We are grateful to Prof. Riccardo Lattuada for endorsing the attribution to Giordano, and for confirming that this work will be included in a forthcoming publication.
